Design Students Try Out a Bit of Blacksmithing

September 30, 2011

One of the many advantages of being housed in an art department is that we get to experiment and collaborate with our studio peers. Last week sculpture professor Rod Northcutt brought in blacksmith Dan Mackessy to hold a smithing workshop for Miami students. Mackessy is an School of the Art Institute of Chicago graduate and currently works out of his studio/forge/welding/machine shop in Sharon, Wisconsin where he designs and fabricates steel and copper decorative arts accoutrements for interior architecture, machines and welds precision mounts for sculptures, and fabricates sculpture for artists. He also designs and builds some interestingly innovative tools and forges.

Quite a few of our design majors decided to give smithing a swing. Thanks, Rod and Dan, for a great workshop.
